As parents of young adults, our generation has done a commendable job raising children to be kind and non-confrontational. However, in many cases, this approach has left them unprepared for the harsh realities of today's world. Many young adults struggle with anxiety and depression, unsure of how to navigate adulthood and achieve success. With much of their social interaction occurring online, many have become socially introverted and are ill-equipped to engage in face-to-face interactions. This often leads to the diagnosis of anxiety, with medication prescribed, perpetuating a cycle that seems never-ending.
As members of the Baby Boomer and Gen X generations, we are among the last to remember a world without the internet and smartphones. The internet, once heralded as a tool to connect people globally, has instead contributed to a growing sense of isolation. Today’s young adults are more introverted than ever, often struggling with basic life skills, which has led to an increase in those still living at home. In fact, a November 2022 report from the New York Post revealed that 54% of Gen Z (ages 18-25) choose to live with their parents, compared to just 9% in 1971. For some parents, the idea of their child living at home forever may seem appealing, but for many, it’s a reality that feels more like a challenge.
This message is for the parents who recognize that our primary responsibility is to teach our children the values of responsibility, independence, and how to become stable, successful adults—capable of building strong relationships and thriving in their personal and professional lives.
